“Rijsttafel – a phrase coined by the Dutch, which literally means “rice table” . Developed by the Dutch, the story goes that the early Dutch colonial masters first approached Indonesian food with a great deal of caution. They sampled one dish after another, as it was borne out by the native waiters, until a feast of more than thirty dishes had emerged.
The Rice Table Indonesian Restaurant presents its rijsttafel in a modern Dutch way by laying out the different dishes on a “rechaud” or food warmer.
The way to enjoy your rijsttafel is to begin by sampling the milder dishes first and then work your way to the more fiery ones. The food will be kept warm, so take your time to savour each dish and enjoy the different and rich flavours of the rijsttafel.
